REC launches installer certification program
REC aims to increase its competitiveness in the solar market with a new installer certification program.
The program launched worldwide earlier this year and more than 100 solar installers across six countries are already certified, according to a release from the company.
Misty Benham, US operations and marketing manager, said the programs haven’t started yet here, but that REC is surveying current installers to see who is interesting and will be assembling programs in the second quarter.
“It’s an additional selling point for our customers,” Benham said. “It will help our installers be more competitive in the market.”
In addition to certifying that installers are well-trained and capable, completing the program allows REC vendors to offer an extended 12-year warranty rather than the standard 10-year warranty.
REC designed the program together with its installers to insure that the curriculum was actually useful valuable to installers, according to the release.
“We’re offering a pretty comprehensive program,” Benham said.
She said she expects significant interest from existing vendors and installers and that REC is preparing for the first round of classes in the US.
Going forward, new installers will likely opt for the certification so they will be able to enjoy the same competitive advantages older solar installers have earned, Benham said.
Many installers who sell REC products also carry other brands of panels. Those who complete the certification program will learn a lot more about REC products and will be able to offer the extended warranty on the REC panels. That might encourage REC vendors who also sell other products to favor REC.
“That’s certainly one of the hopes,” Benham said.
The program offers some professional development opportunities and continuing education for those already in the field and already familiar with REC products, she said. She inquiries about the program have been rolling in and installers seem genuinely interested in it.
