Solarmer Energy, Inc. is a developer of flexible, transparent plastic solar panels which generate low-cost, clean energy from the sun. Solarmer was founded in March 2006 with the objective of offering renewable, affordable, and portable solar energy through commercialization of plastic solar panel technology. The company initially licensed a portfolio of technology developed at UCLA and University of Chicago, and has since invested significant resources in building a world class team and setting up an R&D facility. Solarmer's headquarters are located in El Monte, CA, in a 21,000 square foot facility. The company is equipped with experts in materials science, organic and inorganic chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, and chemical engineering. Solarmer was founded on the principle that there must be a better way to provide energy to consumers for everyday use. Better, renewable, cost effective, cleaner and wireless energy. Solarmer wants to provide power anytime, anywhere, to anyone with minimal impact on the environment. This becomes more and more important as the energy needs of developing countries grow exponentially.
Solarmer Energy Inc. is a leader in the development of innovative photovoltaic technology - plastic solar panel technology, which converts solar energy into electricity in a very cost-effective way. In addition with being cost-effective, plastic solar panels are also flexible, light weight, and thin, which enables new applications, not possible using traditional silicon solar panel technology. Solarmer's transparent solar panels will further increase the amount of products that plastic solar panels could be integrated into.
1. Raw material cost is low. Low cost plastic is used as the active materials to convert solar energy into electricity. 2. Low material usage. The extraordinary light absorption capability of the plastics leads to extremely thin active plastics layer - only a few tenth of micrometer thick, i.e. less than 1/1000 of silicon cell. This material cost is significantly lower. 3. Low manufacturing cost. Very low cost printing techniques will be used to manufacture plastic solar cells (Similar to printing on newspaper). The combination gives much lower cost of equivalent energy (only 10 - 20% that of silicon technology). In addition, the fabrication process is both low temperature and environmentally friendly, significantly reduces the amount of energy consumption in the manufacturing process. |
