This type of system gives one the benefits of selling extra power produced by the PV system back to the utility. Rules about selling power back vary by utility. In addition to selling power these systems also incorporate batteries, usually sealed maintenance free, to store some energy.
When the utility fails these systems can power critical loads by using the energy stored in the batteries. The backup feature happens automatically. By properly sizing the system it is possible to power the critical loads for long periods of time.
